CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – Lake County's remaining members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association gathered recently for their annual celebratory breakfast.
The group met on Monday, Aug. 3, at the Clearlake Oaks home of Ronnie and Janeane Bogner.
On hand for the event was Lake County's last Pearl Harbor survivor, Bill Slater, who was on the USS Pennsylvania when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941.
Also attending were two “sweethearts,” the affectionate term used for widows of Pearl Harbor survivors.
Sweethearts included Alice Darrow, a former Navy nurse whose late husband Dean was on the USS West Virginia; and Charlotte Bower, whose late husband Chuck was at the US Sub Base.
The group was joined by several other World War II veterans, including Don McCloud, Darrel Shumard, Bob Anton, Hank Howe and Ray Benevedes, as well as vets from other wars, among them Doug Patten, Doug Carter, Jessie Head and Andy Peterson.
The group was treated to a tasty breakfast and seated at tables topped by orchids that overlooked High Valley.
