Lake County Horse Council meets April 21

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Horse Council will have a public meeting on Thursday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lakeport Yacht Club at 15 Fifth St. in Lakeport.

The group invites community members to come and enjoy socializing with other “horse people” and hear about important news for horse-keepers. Refreshments and door prizes also will be available.

At this meeting, information will be presented that is important to all who keep horses in Lake County. In particular, a proposed zoning ordinance amendment will be described.

The horse council is working with the Lake County Planning staff to draft recommendations on which the council has worked to get consensus.

The council urges horse owners to attend this meeting to learn how the current zoning ordinance impacts horse keeping and horse facilities. The horse council wants the community's input regarding improvements and changes that the membership will be developing with county planning staff over the next few months.

Community involvement and input in the process is critical so that the horse council can make recommendations to reflect the needs of horse keepers as well as establish minimum criteria for the well being of horses while considering impacts on the environment and neighbors.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Glenn Benjamin from Upper Lake, who is the veterinarian for the exotic animal park, Safari West. If time permits, they will hear updates on the progress of various horse council committees and on upcoming horse council educational seminars.

The group will be accepting entries into our logo contest at this meeting. The logo guidelines are: color ink on a 4-inch by 5-inch card; ability to shrink or stretch the design for use on the letterhead, Web site, correspondence and advertising; logos will be posted and voted on by membership; $50 award for selected logo; the winner will give up all rights to the logo and it will be the property of the Lake County Horse Council. Entrants must be a member of the Lake County Horse Council to be eligible for the prize.

The spring edition of the Lake County Horse Council News Journal is ready to publish and still has advertising space available. For information call Valarie Sullivan, 707-533-3051.
