REGIONAL: Tsunami warning system test set for March 28

NORTH COAST, Calif. – The Mendocino County Office of Emergency Services, in cooperation with the  counties of Humboldt and Del Norte, the National Weather Service, and the California Emergency Management Agency, has scheduled a tsunami warning system test on Wednesday, March 28.

The test will take place that day from 11 a.m. to noon.

The 2011 annual tsunami warning system test for the Northern California Coast was canceled due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last March.

On Monday March 12, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the week of March 25-31 as Tsunami Preparedness Week.

This proclamation was made one year and one day after the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan – which occurred on March 11, 2011 – where thousands of Japanese citizens lost their lives, are still listed as missing, or were seriously injured in either the earthquake or the tsunami that followed.

The impacts of the March 2011 tsunami were felt up and down California's coast.

One man lost his life as he was swept out to sea in Del Norte County.

In Mendocino County, the costs of the March 2011 tsunami were in the millions of dollars, most of which was associated with the marina in the Nolo Harbor District. Del Norte, Humboldt and Santa Cruz counties also suffered significant property damage.

If you are watching television between 11 a.m. and noon on March 28, expect to see a crawler at the bottom of the screen indicating that a tsunami warning has been issued and hear a voice indicating that it is only a test.

If you don’t hear the TV audio, please remember that this is only a test.

If you are listening to the radio you will hear alerting tones followed by a voice announcing that the test is occurring.

If you have a NOAA weather radio with the public alert feature the radio will automatically turn on and you will hear the same message as broadcast on radios.

If there is a real earthquake in the Pacific Ocean that has the potential to generate a tsunami for our coastline the test will be canceled.
