Lake County Horse Council plans spring events calendar

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Horse Council announces several fun and informative events for local horse owners and enthusiasts this spring.

Volunteers will begin reparation work on the Highland Springs Lake Trail Wednesday, May 1, thanks to a grant from AQHA and Tractor Supply Company.

To get the project started, all members and interested parties are invited for an Earth Day celebration and member potluck on Sunday, April 21, at Highland Springs Recreation Area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Special guests will be on hand to share news and a bit of history.

The council has been busy supporting local equine causes, for example, the nomination of the Seabiscuit Stud Barn at Ridgewood Ranch in Willits, to be designated as a historic site with the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Board members are becoming active with S.A.F.E.R (Sonoma Action for Equine Rescue at www.saferhorse.com ) to learn what tools and support Lake County horses and their owners may be able to benefit from.

The LCHC Trails Committee has made good progress with the promotion of state sanctioned safe trail standards to government agencies inside and outside the county.

On Saturday, May 18, the council presents its first Juniors Event and Riding Clinic in Kelseyville, including veterinary demonstrations and hands-on clinic for riders 18 and under.

On Saturday, June 1, the Council will present a booth sponsored by the Lake County Wine Studio on Main Street at the Upper Lake Wild West Day.

Board members will greet guests at their table at the Lake County Rodeo Association Dinner Dance Saturday, April 27. Tickets are available at Rainbow Ag and Lake County Chamber of Commerce.

The group’s inaugural poker ride in February was a huge success, thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers who made it happen. More than 30 new members joined the fun.

The Horse Council congratulates member Anna Senti of Kelseyville, who won the raffle drawing for $75 worth of rock donated by R.B. Peters in Lakeport.

Many more donations from local businesses and individuals made prizes available to the best poker hands, including an overnight package at Konocti Vista Casino, gifts from Kelsey Creek Brewing Company, Guido’s Pizzeria, Rainbow Ag, and more. A fall poker ride is already in the planning stages.
