Elizabeth Ida Streeter Hoebeke (Simmons)

elizabethsimmonsobit

On Sept. 16, 1921, Elizabeth Ida Streeter was born to Calvin and Belle Streeter in Northern Michigan as they prepared for a harsh winter on their sheep farm in Manistee County.

She was a joyous surprise as 11 years had passed since their last child was born. Their love and admiration for her shown throughout her life. She never doubted she was a gift.

As time went on her family left the hardship of the sheep farm and joined their extended family at Gun Lake, Mich., where they owned and managed Streeter's Resort.

There, everybody worked, even Betty. She sold popcorn and hot dog's to the guests, gave the city kids rides on her pony, and went from dock to dock picking up kids for boat rides. By the time she was a teenager she sent her summers working in the resort store.

Eventually she was off to college attending Grand Rapids Junior College and Michigan State. One summer while home working in the store she met the love of her life, a young West Point Cadet, Arnold Jacob Hoebeke, who was working at a nearby camp for the summer.

Arnold graduated from West Point in June of 1941. One month later, on July 17, 1941, they were married and her life was forever changed.

They moved from place to place, lived in far away places, survived World War II and raised four daughters, Pandra Sue Hoemeke Moriarty, Miriam Lynn Hoebeke Osborne, Gayle Elizabeth Hoebeke Love and Susan Hoebeke Morgan (Haubner).

In 2007 Betty moved to Lake County, Calif., to live close to her daughter and her family. She remained in Lake County with the love of her family, including frequent visits from her out-of-town daughters and grandchildren until her death on April 14, 2014.

Betty's final journey was long and many gracious and lovely people helped her along the way.

Many thanks to the staff at Orchard Park, Lake County Hospice (especially Rachel and Sharon), Cindy Smith, Adriana Mack and family, St. John's Episcopal Church and especially the staff at Rocky Point Care Center.

Betty's final days were surrounded by caring and loving people who have beautifully dedicated their lives to bring comfort and grace to the dying and their loved ones. We will forever admire and be grateful to you.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Murl and Bill Streeter, her daughter, Miriam Lynn Hoebeke Osborne (1985), and her husband, Arnold Jacob Hoebeke (1987).

She will be painfully missed by her daughters, Pandra and her husband, Marty Moriarty; Gayle and her husband, Ron Love; and Susan and her husband, Cal Morgan.

She was loved and admired by her grandchildren, Tabb Osborne Davis (Garth), Janie Osborne Battle (Phil), Jim Osborne (Jodi), Heather Warren (Rick), Jessika Leonard (Devin), Ryan Moriarty (Monica), Jared Love (Amanda), Anne Love (Brent), Sara Love Short (Logan) and Ashley Haubner, who will miss her dearly.

Her grandchildren brought her great joy with the gift of an additional 20 great-grandchildren: Jack, Lucy, Lilly, Annie Jane, Max, Andrew, Alex, Patrick, Henry, Alli, Ben, Moriah, Ashley, Phoebe, Guthre, Betsey, Mira, Stella, Luca and Mila.

In later years Betty became an avid storyteller, recanting her adventures and family mishaps. She loved her life. She was always gracious and to the end she smiled in the face of adversity.

Betty will be buried with her husband Arnold on May 15, 2014.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. in the San Francisco National Cemetery located in the Presidio, 1 Lincoln Blvd. Please arrive 15 minutes early.
