Horner: The sheriff's politicized press releases

What’s wrong with the typewriters at the Lake County Sheriff's Office? Maybe a glitch in their software?

If you pay attention to such things as police logs, booking sheets and police scanners, you know that our Lake County sheriff has been hard at work busting pot growers.

I scan the papers every day and nothing is being reported, no perp walks, no trophy pictures, no horrific accounts of dangerous hippies with rifles and dogs.

It seems we were treated to a new story nearly every day during the June election cycle, even though it was spring and there was no mature marijuana to be eradicated.

Daily press releases from the LCSO made sure we viewed daily headlines of the “marijuana problem.” Could we have been manipulated?

The task force is still busting growers every day. They eradicated a large guerrilla grow in Spring Valley just Friday, there was a huge series of raids in Kelseyville where several people were booked on major felonies, but there are no press releases from the LCSO! Its harvest time after all, busting growers should be easy pickins’ (pun intended).

Now as we approach November, we are faced with some more tough decisions at the ballot box.

Measure N has failed, the enforcement tactics of this LCSO has already resulted in lawsuits, the federal court stated in their injunctive order that patients were likely to prevail, and this will cost us millions!

If property seizure is still our only funding strategy for measure N, we will have to seize and sell a lot of property to pay for those losses.

Don’t fall for the LCSO’s headline trickery! Measure N is failing, bans and prohibitions always fail, you do not have to look to far back in history to realize this!

The answer is real regulation, with true oversight, robust enforcement and a funding mechanism to make sure this does not land on the shoulders of taxpayers.

Vote yes on Measure O.
