LAKEPORT, Calif. – A number of events are planned in downtown Lakeport to celebrate Halloween – from parades to trick-or-treating.
The Lakeport Police Department issued an advisory asking for extra caution during the annual celebration.
The agency reported that from noon to 1:15 p.m. Main Street between Ninth and First streets will be closed for the Lakeport Elementary School Halloween parade.
Wet weather could cancel the event. Lakeport Elementary's administration will decide at 9 a.m. Friday if the parade is to be canceled due to rain, officials reported.
Motorists are advised to be aware of the parade route and use caution when driving in the area. Lakeport Police and Public Works units will be on site conducting traffic controls.
The Lakeport City Council, city staff, Lakeport Police Department and Main Street Bicycles this month sponsored a Halloween drug education coloring contest for Lakeport Elementary students, grades kindergarten through third grade. The city reported they received more than 100 entries.
The winners will be announced at 12:15 p.m. at Natural High School in the 800 block of N. Main Street, just prior to the start of the parade, according to Police Chief Brad Rasmussen.
Rasmussen said first place winners will receive bicycles and second and third place winners will receive gift cards.
If the downtown parade is canceled, Rasmussen said the contest winners will be announced and prizes presented at Lakeport Elementary at 12:30 p.m.
Miss Lake County and Miss Lake County Outstanding Teen will be present to help give out the prizes, Rasmussen said.
From 2 to 4 p.m. the Lakeport Main Street Association will host a trick-or-treating events in the city's downtown.
Then, between 3 and 9 p.m., Mellor Drive between 19th and 20th streets and the entire length of 19th Street west of Hartley Street will be closed to traffic for a Halloween Fair that will take place on Mellor Drive. Rasmussen advised motorists to use caution when driving in the area.
Motorists and pedestrians also are advised to use caution and watch out for each other throughout the Halloween evening as there is expected to be heavy foot and vehicle travel in the residential areas of the city. Lakeport Police will be conducting extra patrols in the affected areas, Rasmussen said.
Additionally, Rasmussen said his officers want parents and children to be aware of the following Halloween safety tips:
– Go trick-or-treating with a grown up.
– Make sure your costume lets you see and hear perfectly. You need to be able to watch and listen for cars.
– Make sure your costume fits. It’s easy to trip on costumes that are too big
– Wear brightly colored clothing. Put “glow in the dark” patches or stripes on your costume so that drivers can see you.
– Carry a flashlight.
– Don’t eat treats until you show them to your parent or guardian.
– Visit only people you know.
– Make this and every Halloween a safe and happy one.
The Lakeport Police Department wished everyone a safe and happy Halloween and invited community members to contact officers with any safety concerns you may have.
