LAKEPORT, Calif. – A Lakeport Police sergeant this week came to the rescue of an injured raptor he found in a city street.
Sgt. Joe Eastham discovered the injured osprey on South Main Street on Monday night, the agency reported.
The osprey was found in the traffic lane and it’s believed she had been hit by a car, police said.
Eastham said the bird was stunned, and so he was able to easily pick her up and get her placed securely in the rear seat of his patrol car.
Lakeport Police Chief Brad Rasmussen said the osprey was taken to Wasson Memorial Veterinary Clinic for treatment.
Wasson staffer Tina Howard told Lake County News on Wednesday that the osprey suffered a laceration and is doing OK.
Howard said the osprey is being sent to Santa Rosa to be evaluated in order to determine if it can fly. Wasson doesn’t have the flight cages needed for that kind of evaluation.
Once the osprey’s treatment and recovery is completed, Howard said the goal is to bring her back and release her in the Lakeport area.
Bringing the bird of prey back to Lakeport to be released is important because ospreys mate for life.
This is actually the second osprey Eastham has rescued.
He found another three years ago on Highway 29 and took it to safety, he said.
