The Monday Fishing Report: Getting ready for fall

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – I’m anticipating the fall bass bite.

I’m researching warm clothing material and having a company called www.wheelchairjeans.com make me a great pair of insulated fishing pants. Truckers will understand how pants ride up when sitting.

There are companies that make pants with a much longer seat to them and a normal rise in the front. I find these very comfortable, and when fishing in the fall and winter, comfort is key.

The bass can handle the cold so if you can handle the cold too you will catch bass.

I remember fishing one night at 32 degrees but bass were on the bite so well I never felt the cold until we realized we needed to wait for the sun to melt the ice off the ramps at Fifth Street.

If I choose the correct material I’ll be very comfortable. There should be a law that refrigerator repairman and workman wear these style of pants with a longer seat (wink).

I talked to a few people who’ve fished the south end of Clear Lake. An employee from Limit Out Tackle, 707-998-1006, says Drop Shot is working well in the Clearlake Oaks arm. The owner, Bob Higgins, underwent knee surgery and will return when he has recovered – wish him well.

One fisherman is having good luck casting deep diving crank baits toward shore in the clearer water and near rocks. Another says Senkos are king and Senkos or a minnow type lure called a Smokin’ Shad is working well from Henderson Point down to the Rock Garden.

Here is this week’s report.

Clear Lake – North

The cooler nights have helped the algae problem on the north end. The weeds are dying off as part of their life cycle.

The fishing is usually a little slow around the full moon as the fish feed more at night. There are silverside minnows everywhere and the 4- to 12-inch bass are feeding on them. If you fish with small baits you will catch a lot of small fish!

Guys are catching fish on everything just go out and fish what you have confidence in. You still have to locate them. Move around until you catch one, then fish that area. The water is getting shallow around the shore so just move out a little deeper.

There are a lot of catfish being caught shallow as they are feeding on the silverside minnows also.

Russian River – Trout

The East branch of the Russian River was planted on Thursday. I went with Gary Hill on Thursday afternoon and we caught limits in about two hours, some on bait and some on lures.

The average size was a little smaller than previous trips.
