KELSEYVILLE – On Saturday, March 17, there will be a hands-on, fun-filled presentation on activities parents and teachers can do with young children that encourage them to play with the sounds of words.
Hallie Yopp and Shelia Arnold will share these “phonemic awareness” activities at Konocti Harbor Resort & Spa from 9 a.m. to noon in the Pomo Room. Some of these activities include reciting tongue twisters, rhymes, chants and silly songs that repeat sounds or twist them around.
Yopp and Arnold are well-known presenters who specialize in lively, practical workshops. They will also discuss the importance of the preschool years in laying the foundation for success in school and beyond.
Research strongly indicates that young children who play with the sounds in words tend to learn letter names and sounds more easily and this helps them as they begin to read.
There will be a $10 fee to cover morning refreshments, and some scholarships are available by calling the number listed below. Pre-registration is required and the deadline is March 5.
Seating will be limited so please register early.
Location: Pomo Room, Konocti Harbor Resort & Spa. Contact: Nina Marino, Lake County Office of Education, at 994-7908 x 29 or nmarino@lake-coe.k12.ca.us.
