Hot Coffee is Second Sunday Cinema’s Free Film for May 13th

Remember the elderly woman a few years back who spilled hot coffee on her lap at McDonald’s, sued, and won “millions”? She was made a laughing stock (Seinfeld. Letterman.) And after laughing, we all seemed to agree that she’d made out like a bandit over slight discomfort. Much more seriously, the McDonald's coffee case has been cited over and over by the corporate media as an example of how citizens have taken ridiculous advantage of the legal system. But what if all of that were wrong?

Director Susan Salatoff had been a Plaintiff’s lawyer for 25 years when she made this well-received HBO documentary on the infamous Liebeck vs McDonalds case (and 3 others). It premiered at Sundance and documents four very human cases that show the other side of the push for tort reform. The huge piles of DIS-information we’ve been fed by the Corporate Machine is shocking.  The true stories the plaintiffs share are moving. The continuing and ever-escalating power-grabs by corporations and the corporate media are profoundly worrisome. What to do?  Tim Williams of Lake County Move to Amend will give us one very good option.  He will introduce the film and afterwards, be available for Q&A and an opportunity to become constructively and meaningfully involved in Move to Amend's galvanizing nation-wide work to remove legal "personhood" from corporations' cache of power tools.
