Wine studio to host art and wine reception Aug. 4 and 5

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Lake County Wine Studio is hosting a wine release party and artist show reception with Richard Kasmier of Lakeport Winery, and artist Susan Kahn from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, and 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5.

The $15 ($12.50/ per person for studio club members) wine sampler, featuring appetizers by Chic Le Chef, will showcase Lakeport Winery 2016 Sauvignon Blanc with Ancho chili citrus chicken with charred scallion and pumpkin seed pesto on a spiced tortilla, the 2015 Syrah with a spinach, roasted corn, poblano chili and cotija cheese quesadilla with roasted tomato salsa and lime crema, 2015 Petite Sirah with lamb meatballs with birria sauce and the Tawny Port wine with apricot panna cotta with almond brittle and shaved Mexican chocolate.

Photographer Susan Kahn will be showing a collection of photographs inspired by her interest in the wildlife on and around Clear Lake.

She enjoys capturing and identifying the diverse wildlife as well as the infinitely beautiful and dynamic images each season presents in Lake County.

Kahn’s venture into wildlife photography comes after many years of developing solid technique on black and white film including sports, photojournalism, photo essay and portraiture. She later transitioned into the realm of digital photography.

Kahn’s informal training began with her grandfather’s 1930’s 35mm Eangefinder camera and black and white darkroom technique. “This is the foundation I will always carry forward,” she said.

Her formal photography education includes both digital and black and white film study at The Academy of Art and U.C. Extension.

While working as a high school teacher, her principal assigned her to the photography and yearbook classes, where she worked to inspire future generations of photographers.

Since 1990, she has participated in juried contests and has received awards for her entries in the Lake County Fair and Oakland’s Festival at the Lake.

The new Lakeport Winery brand has just been launched this year by Richard Kasmier, or "KAZ." Kaz was an advertising photographer in his past life. After eight years of award-winning amateur winemaking, he made the leap to commercial winemaking.

He opened Kaz Winery as a small family owned boutique operation in Kenwood, Sonoma Valley. Kaz and his wife Sandi, daughter Kristin, son Ryan, and daughter-in-law Emily handled all of the facets of the business.

Still a small, family owned winery today, they specialize in organic wines, complex reds, bold blends, rare varietals and port-style wines.

In 2015 they relocated their production and tasting room into the Wild West Winery in Big Valley. They are now sourcing all of their fruit from Lake County's vineyards, and their wines are all low, or no sulfite added wines.

Lakeport Winery brand wines will be available to Kaz Klub members and will be sold at the Wine Studio and in restaurants in and around Lake County.

Lake County Wine Studio is a gallery for display of arts and a tasting room, wine bar and retail shop for the fine wines of Lake County. Artists’ shows are held on a monthly basis with art and wine receptions held the first Friday and subsequent Saturday of each month.

The gallery is located at 9505 Main St. in Upper Lake. It is open Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m., Friday from 1 to 8 p.m., and by appointment on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The Kahn art show will be on display for the full month of August.
