CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The Clearlake City Council recently approved a rental agreement with Konocti Unified School District that will give the district space for another school facility.
The agreement between the city and Konocti Unified is for use of the city-owned building located at 4700 Golf Ave., next to Lake County Youth Service's youth center.
The district will use the building to accommodate students of Blue Heron, an alternative education program for high school students, ninth to 12th grades.
According to Konocti Unified Superintendent Donna Becnel, Blue Heron currently has 24 students enrolled.
Those students are being schooled at the Konocti Education Center, formerly Oak Hill Middle School, Becnel said.
Becnel said that, beginning in January, the Health Occupations Magnet High School will hold classes at the Konocti Education Center, creating a need for additional classroom space.
The agreement with the city leases the Golf Avenue building to Konocti Unified for five years at an annual fee of $1.
Konocti Unified is responsible for all renovations, maintenance and upkeep, as well as taxes and insurance. Utilities also are the responsibility of the school district.
Fundraising activities are permitted on the premises provided they are of benefit to the lease holder.
The agreement includes an option for lease renewal if there exists a written mutual agreement.
At its Dec. 11 meeting, the council will consider a request to use another city-owned property, a building located at 14061 Lakeshore Drive, for a warming center.
At that time, the council also will discuss a proposal for a veterans housing project in the city.
