College moves forward with bond plans

In November, Superintendent/President Kathryn Lehner formed the Bond Implementation Planning Committee that includes key management personnel, classified staff and faculty.

“Measure W passed with voter approval substantially greater than the 55 percent required for passage under Proposition 39,” said Lehner. “Now the really satisfying work begins as we move forward to literally open doors for student success with new and upgraded facilities.”

Lehner explained that, in order to manage the hundreds of elements of a successful bond implementation plan, the district has established a Bond Implementation Planning (BIP) Committee that will meet weekly to address current and future issues, and provide information for regular communications to students, college staff and the public.

The Bond Implementation Planning Committee offers advice to the superintendent/president concerning the overall planning for the implementation of Measure W bond projects.

Committee activities include project identification, planning coordination, prioritization and scheduling, and coordination of communication to college constituencies about the status of all bond projects.

Subcommittees will be formed to focus on specific projects, such as the new Library/Learning Resource Center on the Ukiah Campus, a new permanent Willits Center in north Mendocino County and a new permanent Lake Center in the Lakeport area.

Members of the Bond Implementation Planning Committee are Lehner, BIP chair; Eileen Cichocki, director of Fiscal Services; Mike Adams, director of Facility Services; Tom Kesey, vice president of Administrative Services; John Loucks, telecommunications technician (classified member); Ross Beck, director of Public Information and Marketing; Mark Rawitsch, dean of Instruction-Centers; Meridith Randall, VP of Education and Student Services; Karen Christopherson, director of Computing Services; Donald Moore, dean of Student Services; and John Koetzner, head librarian (faculty member).

At their December meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the formation of the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee as required under Proposition 39. Applications to serve on the committee are available online at www.mendocino.edu and are due Friday, Jan. 19.

The Board of Trustees will appoint members to the committee at their February 7 meeting.

With numerous projects planned over several years, ranging from new facilities to renovations, the college intends to keep students and the general public aware of activities at various stages. “We will be placing signs on the Ukiah Campus, Willits Center, and Lake Center listing projects being financed by Measure W and their projected completion dates,” said Beck. “We also plan to place signs at locations where work is being done to increase awareness of bond funded activities.”

Beck added that the college has set up a new Web site at www.mendocino.edu/bond where news and updates of Measure W Bond activities will be available.
