Kounalakis spends day in Mendocino and Lake counties as part of ‘Summer Road Trip’

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Eleni Kounalakis, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, made stops in Mendocino and Lake counties last Thursday as part of her “Summer Road Trip” around California.

Kounalakis met with Mendocino County Democratic Central Committee members and community leaders at local favorite Schat’s Bakery and Café.

She also met with tribal leaders of the Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California, including Tribal Chairman and Lake County Supervisor Jose Moke Simon III.

Later in the day, Kounalakis spoke at a Lake County Democratic Central Committee meeting in Kelseyville with Chair Carlos Negrete and Vice Chair Rebecca Curry.

“Jobs, education, and job training are critical issues for the North Coast and inland counties,” said Kounalakis. “The lieutenant governor’s office is charged with working on issues of economic development. As a businesswoman, who spent 18 years in business, I understand what it takes to promote good jobs, and that’s what I will focus on if I am elected lieutenant governor.”

Kounalakis will continue her tour of California throughout the summer, including stops along the Central Coast and in Southern California. She has been on the road over the past three weeks, visiting more than 30 counties in northeast California, the eastern Sierras, the Central Valley and the Sierra Foothills.

Kounalakis is a business woman and diplomat. She was appointed by President Barack Obama as ambassador to Hungary in 2010.

She is a life-long Democrat and five-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention and worked as an advocate for early childhood education as a member of California's First 5 Commission, and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism.

She was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to lead the California International Trade and Investment Advisory Council and served as a member of the San Francisco Port Commission.

Prior to serving our country in the diplomatic corps, she was president of AKT Development Corp. in Sacramento, where she grew up.

She is a graduate of the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and Dartmouth College. She and her husband, Markos, live in San Francisco where they are raising their two teenage sons.

She has received endorsements from U.S. Senator Kamala Harris; San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee; Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg; Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf; Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs; Representatives Anna Eshoo, Doris Matsui and Mike Thompson; former State Senator Mark Leno; and Sacramento Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, among others.
