LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Hooves and Wheels Driving Club will host a two-session “Introduction to Driving” clinic series in February and March.

The club was organized more than 15 years ago, in Lake County to promote the safe use of horses in harness for pleasure and recreation and to provide events for all levels of drivers.

Whether your interest is recreational driving or showing the horse in harness, the club mission is to help everyone to have fun and be safe.

The first session will address the equipment needed and schooling required to prepare a horse or pony to safely pull a cart.

It will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at the home of Sally Green, 7803 Wight Way in Lakeport.

Green and Barbara Kroboth will discuss and demonstrate the purpose and value of long line work, ground driving and introducing a drag to develop the skills needed for a pony to safely pull a cart.

There will be initial description and use of some parts of harness for training purposes.

The second session, in March, will have a brief review of ground work recommended, and, fully address all the parts of a harness, the purpose of the each part and how to properly and safely harness the animal.

They will also demonstrate the proper way to introduce a pony to a cart. The differences in both light harness and draft harness will be discussed and demonstrated.

The clinics are open to the public for a $10 donation to the club.
