LAKEPORT, Calif. – Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument Manager Rebecca Carr Wong will be the guest presenter at this month's Sierra Club Lake Group general meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m.

The gathering, at the Round Room at the Mendocino College Lake Center located at 2565 Parallel Drive, Lakeport, is free and open to the public.

The monument, which was designated by President Barack Obama on July 10, 2015, is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management Ukiah Field Office and the US Forest Service Mendocino National Forest.

It permanently protects 330,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land noted for extraordinary biodiversity and containing three federal Wilderness areas and a State Wild and Scenic River; about two-thirds of the acreage is located in Lake County.

Since designation BSMNM has faced challenges including possible reversal of its special status, a government shutdown, and a series of massive wildfires including the 2018 Ranch Fire, the largest in California history.

Wong’s primary role is to facilitate interagency coordination, community-based partnerships, volunteer and public efforts in support of national monument land management, and her update will include an overview of recent studies and public programs.

"We stand at a critical time in Lake County's environmental future," said Sierra Club Lake Group Chair, Denise Rushing. "The Sierra Club Lake Group is committed to gathering and disseminating information, resources and deeper wisdom to help guide us to a healthier future."
