The Ladies of the Lake Quilt Guild invites you to learn English paper piecing at their monthly meeting on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. Courtesy photo.

THIS MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELED.

LAKEPORT, Calif. — The Ladies of the Lake Quilt Guild invites you to attend this month’s guild meeting.

They will be learning English paper piecing from Kris Nelson and how to do braiding and couching on their home machines from Kerrie Hershey.

The meeting will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Lakeport Senior Center at 527 Konocti Ave.

Guild Member Kris Nelson has been sewing and quilting for as long as she can remember having learned from her mother who was an active quilter.

She has focused on baby quilts, but enjoys trying new techniques, drafting her own patterns, as well as working in mixed media such as ribbon embroidery, appliqué, embellishment, and many other techniques.

Kris Nelson will talk about the origins and demonstrate the basics and what you need to get started with English paper piecing. Courtesy photo.

After raising three children, remodeling six houses and working in architecture for 35 years, she is looking forward to semi-retirement and quilting.

Nelson’s lecture, English paper piecing, or EPP for short, is a hand sewing technique that is great for quilting on the go. You will learn the origins, basics and what you need to get started.

After the meeting, if you would like to join them, guild member Kerrie Hershey will instruct them on the techniques of braiding and couching on their home machines. They will learn to embellish using pearl cotton, silk ribbon, or other fancy fibers on our machines.

If you want to give it a try, you will need your sewing machine with power cord and foot control, open toe foot, pearl cotton and matching thread, size 80 sharp needle, a pencil, small sharp scissor, two 12-inch squares of muslin or other fabric that contrasts with your threads. If you prefer to just watch, that’s OK, too.

After the meeting, visitors and members may bring their machines to learn the technique of braiding and couching. Courtesy photo.

Hershey describes herself as a traditional quilter, one who likes traditional patterns, and uses a variety of colors to achieve the traditional look. Scrappy quilts, composed of many assorted fabrics, are another of her favorite styles.

Although she chooses an old-fashioned look for her quilts, Hershey often creates them with modern methods by speed-cutting the fabric with a rotary cutter and assembling the quilts by machine.

She does long-arm machine quilting and hand-quilting for her projects. One of her quilts earned the “Best Machine Workmanship: Traditional” award at the 2003 Pacific International Quilt Show in Santa Clara. She has also published two patterns with Quiltsmart.
