State seeks applications for Instructional Quality Commission

The California Department of Education is seeking individuals to apply for membership on the Instructional Quality Commission, formerly known as the Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission.

The commission is an advisory body to the State Board of Education and consists of 16 public members, 13 of whom are appointed by the board.

The commission will be responsible for advising the State Board of Education on matters related to curriculum and instruction.

The commission develops and recommends curriculum frameworks; develops and recommends criteria for evaluating instructional materials submitted for adoption; evaluates instructional materials that have been submitted by publishers and makes recommendations to adopt or reject each submission; recommends policies and activities to the State Board of Education, the California Department of Education, and local educational agencies regarding curriculum and instruction; and advises and makes recommendations to the State Board of Education on implementing the state’s academic content standards.

Individuals appointed to the commission will serve staggered terms of up to, but no more than, four years commencing in March 2012.

All applications must be received by Jan. 18, 2012.

The application and supplemental questionnaire can be found on the State Board of Education Commissions and Committees application information Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/cc/ab.
