LAKEPORT – Several local athletes are involved in a world class triathlon held here in Lakeport on June 10.

Mike Clifton along with other local athletes, including Dr. Paul Farley and Mike Murray, will compete in the event and will be joined by athletes from around the country.

This is the inaugural series with the Lakeport race being the second of four races held in locations throughout the US and Canada. Plans to expand the series to 20 events worldwide by 2010 are already under way.

The Tri One O One Race Management Team, in conjunction with members of the Lake County community, are working together in hosting this event which will take place in and around Lakeport with the center of activities at Library Park.

Starting with the 1.86 swim course launching at 7 a.m. from the First Street corner of Library Park, athletes will transition to bicycles for the second portion of the race.

The bike course will bring athletes through Lakeport to the Scotts Valley area then back to downtown Lakeport for a three lap course totaling 80.6 miles.

The final portion of the race, a two-lap running course totaling 18.6 miles will be up to the areas of Hartley Road, Boggs Lane, Crystal Lake and Keeling before returning for the finish line at Library Park with the last athlete finishing about 7 p.m.

The total distance is 101 miles, thus the race’s name, Triathlon One O One.

There will be many opportunities for residents to be involved in this world class event, which is expected to draw hundreds of people to the community beginning a few days before the June 10 race day and for a few days to follow.

The event will require up to 300 community volunteers to help with everything from pre-event setup to running aide stations to cheering on the athletes at the finish line.

Local groups looking for fundraising opportunities can send teams of volunteers to earn money for their respective groups.

There are also still opportunities to join the Race Committee comprised of community members working to assist in the event planning and production tasks that are already underway.

And, of course, anyone interesting is being a spectator and cheering on the athletes along the route are encouraged to attend.

In addition to being somewhere along the route to watch the excitement, spectators are invited to watch the awards ceremony which will be held at the completion of the race.

So bring those cow bells and banners and be part of the exciting event!

Event organizers are actively recruiting for more volunteers – individuals as well as clubs and organizations (school groups, athletic teams, churches, Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, etc.) and businesses to participate.
