Supervisors to consider forming marijuana cultivation ordinance committee

LAKEPORT, Calif. – This week the Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal to form a new committee to begin anew the process of drafting a marijuana cultivation ordinance for the county.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the board chambers on the first floor of the Lake County Courthouse, 255 N. Forbes St., Lakeport.

At 10 a.m. the board will consider forming the new marijuana cultivation ordinance committee.

Last year the board accepted a marijuana cultivation ordinance that it withdrew this past January after a referendum effort was started by the Lake County Citizens for Responsible Regulations and the Lake County Green Farmers Association.

The groups have since put forward their own Measure D, which will appear as an initiative on the June ballot. Unlike the previous county ordinance, Measure D would allow grows as large as 12 plants on residential-zoned lots of a half-acre or less.

Measure D also invokes the Lake County Right to Farm Ordinance, which states that its purpose and intent is “to reduce the loss to the County of its agricultural resources by limiting the circumstances under which agricultural operations or activities may be deemed to constitute a nuisance.”

At a meeting earlier this year Supervisor Denise Rushing had suggested using Measure D as a starting point to redrafting a new ordinance.

In other business, Lakeport resident Dawn Ingalls is appealing a nuisance animal abatement order for her dog Wolfman. That matter will be heard at 10:30 a.m.

At 10:45 a.m., the board will continue a discussion from its April 3 meeting on a proposed ordinance relating to the sale, use and display of fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county.
