LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Since 1972, Soroptimist International of Clear Lake has been giving a hand up to women and girls.

In February four Lake County women were honored by the club in three award categories, totaling $5,800 in cash awards for educational and community pursuits.

“We’re fighting poverty with education,” said Club Vice President Tina Scott. “The annual Spring Fling is our signature fundraising event and the funds raised stay right here in Lake County,” she said. “Tickets are still available for the March 23 event and I encourage everyone to grab a friend and join us for a fabulous runway fashion show featuring locals modeling Lake County’s best.”

“Recently we selected two deserving Live Your Dream winners who will be able to continue their educations with the cash awards they received,” said Scott.

Rachael Jones, first place winner, will use her $3000 cash award to continue her schooling at Woodland Community College in Clearlake. Her field of study is nursing.

“As a single mom, I am working hard for my family’s future and ultimately I want to work with our elder generation where the needs here in Lake County are so great,” said Jones. “I am currently a caregiver and coordinator with Helping Hands. I love what I do and a degree will open a door of opportunity that will allow me to do more in my chosen field.”

Jaylene Binstock, second place winner, is attending Humboldt State University and will use her $2,000 award to pursue her studies in the field of leadership.

“I was pursuing an AA degree in Napa and raising my daughter when life took a downward turn,” said Binstock. “I returned to Lake County and rethought my situation. Today I am working towards a much brighter future for myself and my daughter. This award enables me to cover some of the costs associated with a 4-year degree. I am so grateful.”

Also selected to receive awards were Rainey Vanoven, a high school volunteer, and Claudine Pedroncelli, volunteer director of the Upper Lake Senior Support Services.

Vanoven received the $500 Violet Richardson award, given to youth volunteers.

“As vice president of the California Scholarship Federation Club at her school, Rainey exemplifies the motto, scholars for service,” said Scott, the selection committee chair.

“It’s an amazing feeling knowing that simple acts of kindness can make a difference in someone’s life,” said Vanoven. “I enjoy volunteering and plan to continue my community service work with Citizens Caring for Clearlake, the Konocti Challenge, mentoring youth and other volunteering opportunities.”

The $300 Ruby Award, given to women who make significant contributions in their communities, was presented to Claudine Pedroncelli who plans to donate her award to a favorite charity.

“Recognized for her many volunteer efforts – from organizing school programs for girls to feeding the community to serving seniors – Pedroncelli epitomizes the spirit of giving back,” said Lisa Morrow, Ruby award committee chair.

“I love the idea of helping women and girls achieve their potential,” said Pedroncelli. “So often, it just takes a helping hand, a vote of confidence and a gentle push to reach someone who is struggling.”

“These are examples of how our Soroptimist Club serves the Lake County Community,” said Morrow, club treasurer. ”The proceeds from the Spring Fling will allow us to continue our work and hopefully increase the number of women and girls we can reach – all for the betterment of the community.”

The Saturday, March 23, event is at the Lake County Fairgrounds, from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be food by Fresh & Bangin, desserts by the Woodland Community College Culinary program, wine from R Vineyards, music by David Neft, silent and live auctions and more.

Get your tickets at www.eventbrite.com, Best of Lake County Fashion Show. The cost is $25 in advance or $30 at the door. For more information call Tina Scott at 707-849-4414.
