Award-winning documentary ‘Wilder than Wild: Fire, Forests, and the Future’ to screen at the Soper Reese

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Seigler Springs Community Redevelopment Association and its co-sponsors are hosting a screening of the award-winning documentary “Wilder than Wild: Fire, Forests, and the Future” at the Soper Reese Theatre in Lakeport on Friday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Free registration is required, as space is limited. Register online at Brown Paper Tickets or by phone at 707-289-4052.

“Wilder than Wild” is a one-hour documentary that reveals how fire suppression and climate change have exposed Western landscapes to large, high intensity wildfires.

The Valley fire and 2017 fires are included as examples, and the film goes on to explore strategies that are being developed to help mitigate the impact of these fires.

The screening at the Soper Reese Theatre is part of a larger effort to engage communities in conversations about the future of living with wildfire risk. Local wildfire experts will be present after the screening to talk with the audience about strategies for protecting the beauty and safety of homes and communities.

On the speaker panel are Victoria Brandon, Sierra Club; M. Youngblood Konkle, Robinson Rancheria of Pomo Indians; Michael Jones, forest advisor, UC Cooperative Extension; Gary Prather, private forest owner and retired fire chief; and Mary Jane Montana, county building inspector and county fire marshal.

Light refreshments will be offered on sale, and donations will be accepted to help fund future events and community education.

Seigler Springs Community Redevelopment Association recognizes the importance of building community awareness about mitigation strategies in this new age of wildfire.

SSCRA has been working closely with members of the Cobb Area Council, the South Lake Fire Safe Council, the Sierra Club, North Coast Opportunities, and other local and regional community partners to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods and economic centers.

SSCRA helps residents incorporate best practices in shaping their communities, including building homes in defensible clusters, developing collaborative decision-making skills, and learning how to write successful grant applications.

The goal is to help area residents develop cooperative associations and housing and help communities develop their capacity to cultivate and safeguard their economic development, health and safety.
