NORTH COAST, Calif. — The Mendocino National Forest is recruiting for its 2024 wildland fire on call program.

The Mendocino National Forest sponsors and dispatches nine on-call/organized crew wildland fire type-II hand crews.

The program has been in existence for decades and has a positive and solid reputation. On-call crews assist wildland fire suppression efforts both locally and nationally.

The typical season lasts from May through November.

This training opportunity will provide the basic fire courses. Once you complete the whole program (about 10 days), you will be certified as a Firefighter Type II. No previous experience is necessary.

Register online and attend one of their in-person hiring days. Deadline to register is Feb. 1, 2024.

Hiring days will take place as follows:

• Willows: Jan. 9 to 10, 825 N Humboldt St., Willows, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Upper Lake: Jan. 16 to 17, 10025 Elk Mountain Road, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Chico: Jan. 23 to 24, 3965 Morrow Lane, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Willows: Jan 25, at 311 S Villa. St., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Board of Supervisors is seeking applicants to fill vacancies on the Public Defender Oversight Committee.

The current bylaws require two members of the general public and one attorney to be appointed to this advisory board.

The purpose of this committee is to receive and review reports on the county’s public defender program and discuss the performance and ability to meet the needs of the county, the courts and those who utilize these services.

Applications are available at the Lake County Courthouse, Clerk of the Board Office, Room 109, 255 North Forbes Street, Lakeport, California, or online at https://www.lakecountyca.gov/1116/Board-of-Supervisors.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Lake County Registrar of Voters Office said it will hold a county random alphabet drawing for next year's State Assembly District 4 election.

The drawing will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at the elections office, 325 N. Forbes St., Lakeport.

The process is pursuant to Elections Code Section 13111(i), following the procedures set forth in Elections Code Section 13112.

The results of the drawing will be used to arrange the names of candidates on the county of Lake’s March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election official ballots for the legislative office of State Assembly member District 4.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The AgVenture Class of 2023 met for its fourth and final session on Nov. 17 at The Ripe Choice Farm in Lakeport.

The day was highlighted by a visit to the Chacewater Olive Mill with its new Italian olive press running full bore, followed by an educational wine tasting curated by Marlana Gould of Brassfield Estate.

The wines, crafted by Shannon Family Wines, Chacewater Winery, Brassfield Estate Winery, and award-winning home winemaker and class member Merry Jo Velasquez, were made from grapes from four of Lake County’s AVAs.

Expert speakers who led the informational program included Sam Upton, Lake County Deputy Agricultural Commissioner; Paul Manuel, owner of Chacewater Winery and Olive Mill; and Eric Aasen, retired biotechnologist.

An ag labor panel featuring Matthew Viohl, California Farm Bureau Federation’s Director of Federal Policy, David Weiss of Bella Vista Farming Co., and Bonnie Sears of Beckstoffer Vineyards Red Hills discussed the history of immigration legislation, independent labor contractors and the H-2A Program, as well as the advantages, challenges, and disadvantages of present-day regulations and programs, both to employers and farmworkers.

The session ended with a candid, interactive discussion by three farmworkers, Octavio Jimenez, supervisor at Scully Packing Company; Lupe Perez, supervisor at Beckstoffer Vineyards Red Hills; and Jaime Rosas, an independent farmer.

Each of them described how they came to this country with nothing and their individual life experiences, both personal and professional, leading to the responsible positions they now hold.

It takes the cooperation of the entire agricultural community to produce an award-winning program, and the AgVenture Committee wishes to thank our partners who treated this year’s class to an insider’s view of their ranches and facilities: Gregory Panella of Panella Orchards, Scully Packing Co., Kendall-Jackson Winery, Beckstoffer Vineyards Red Hills, Seely Orchards, Upper Lake High School FFA and AgVocational Faculty and Chacewater Olive Mill.

The committee also extends a big thank you to Bella Vista Farming Co. for providing transportation for all four sessions, and to the venue sponsors, who put a sparkle into each session with their warm atmosphere and delicious lunches: Jeff and Beth Havrilla of Lake Event Design, Beckstoffer Vineyards’ panoramic deck with meal catered by Rosey Cooks, Bernie Butcher of the Blue Wing Saloon and Cafe, and Tammy and Mark Lipps of The Ripe Choice Farm and Catering.

AgVenture, presented by Lake County CWA, has now completed 12 seasons. The program, designed for non-farming community leaders and others who wish to understand the vital role that agriculture plays in Lake County’s economy, comprises four monthly sessions from August to November. Its dedicated steering committee includes Colleen Rentsch, Bonnie Sears, Sharron Zoller, Katherine VanDerWall, Rebecca Harper, Toni Scully, and Debra Sommerfield.

Invitations to apply for the 2024 class will be extended in the spring. Contact any committee member to suggest potential nominees.
