LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Firefighters on Wednesday brought a wildland fire near Lower Lake under full control and continued their efforts to contain other incidents around the region.
Cal Fire said the Murphy fire, which burned about 40 acres near Lower Lake, was contained as of Wednesday morning.
The Murphy fire began Monday afternoon along Highway 29 at Agua Dulce drive, three miles south of Lower Lake.
Cal Fire had used an aggressive attack, including air resources, to stop the fire, which at one point was threatening nearby homes after being fanned by high winds.
That same afternoon, the 70-acre Sand fire began west of Arbuckle in neighboring Colusa County.
The Sand fire also was fully contained on Wednesday, Cal Fire said.
The North Coast’s biggest incident, the Grade fire in Mendocino County, remained at 900 acres, with containment up to 90 percent as to Wednesday evening, according to Cal Fire.
The Grade fire began on Sunday afternoon five miles west of Redwood Valley as the result of a pickup and travel trailer that caught fire along Highway 101, as Lake County News has reported.
The Range fire, which began on Monday afternoon on Cow Mountain, west of Ukiah in Mendocino County, remained at 20 acres, with containment at 90 percent on Wednesday evening, Cal Fire said.
On Wednesday, investigators with Cal Fire’s Mendocino Unit released findings into the cause of the Range fire, concluding that it was sparked by target shooting at the Cow Mountain rifle range.
